An invitation to Signet clients to discuss New Economic and Environmental Indexes for Terminal Sire Breeds

Your opportunity to influence the breeding indexes of tomorrow

Signet are planning to update the breeding indexes we use in our genetic evaluation of terminal sire breeds. This work will capitalise on new approaches to assessing carcase traits, generating indexes that help commercial farmers to hit both economic and environmental breeding goals.

This AHDB funded research will be delivered by AGBU, the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit, University of New England, Australia.

Research fellow Gus Rose will lead the work, supported by an internationally recognised team.

As part of this work, Gus is heading to the UK to talk to Signet clients about the ways they use the service and what their clients require. To support this engagement a series of meetings are being organised in the lead up to the Sheep Breeders Roundtable in November. It would be great if you could join us.

Topics to be covered include

  • New approaches to assessing abattoir traits – Samuel Boon
  • The development of economic and environmental breeding indexes – Gus Rose and Breeders
  • Genomic opportunities and plans for 2025 – Samuel Boon

For our meetings in Devon and Shropshire, we will also be joined by Dr Daniel Brown, Principal Scientist at AGBU. Daniel and Gus have both kindly agreed to stay on for the Sheep Breeders Roundtable in Nottingham and will be available through the weekend to chat to breeders and hear your views.

We realise in a short space of time it is impossible to interact with all our clients, particularly those further afield in Wales and Scotland. A series of online updates will be held later in the winter to ensure everyone is fully briefed about these exciting developments.

Planned meetings. Places are limited, please book online to guarantee your place and catering

  • Askham Bryan College - CANCELLED & MOVED ONLINE
  • Please note that we have had to cancel the planned meeting at Askham Bryan, Yorkshire. In its place we will try to run a shorter, online session using TEAMS 10am-11:30am on Tuesday 12th November.
  • If you are able to join us, please contact Laura or myself and we will forward a link to the meeting.
