Update to the Genetic Evaluation of Sussex Cattle

Signet are pleased to announce that we have enhanced the genetic evaluation that we deliver to Sussex cattle breeders through the inclusion of 18,000 additional pedigree records which the Society has provided for cattle born since 2000. This is a large amount of new data to support our current weight recording programme (which is free for Society Cattle Society members).

Taking 2023 born Sussex cattle as a typical example. The table below shows the average Beef Value for the 717 Signet Recorded cattle born in 2023 was 41, however in addition to these records we now include another 1,340 Sussex cattle records for cattle that were born in that year and on average, they have a Beef Value of 33; with several falling into the Top 25% of the breed on the basis of their parentage alone. These are the new and less well-known Sussex breeding lines that it would be interesting to performance record in the future.

What do these changes mean for Sussex breeders?

The inclusion of these Society pedigree records means that:-

  1. Pedigree errors or gaps in a family tree have been identified and animal records updating using the new information.
    • Please check your records carefully, so we can review any important changes.
  2. Sussex breeders now have a set of more accurate and reliable breeding values on which to make breeding decisions
  3. New breeders can request a report showing the current genetic merit of their herd, indicating the breeding values they might expect if they were to start weight recording themselves.
  4. Breeding values are now available for any young bull or heifer that has been registered with the Society, these breeding values that can be viewed by searching on the Signet website

Signet are sending a new breeding report out to our members along with an updated benchmark. If you have any questions, please drop us a line, email: [email protected]
