75% of Hampshire Down sheep entered to the Premier Sale were performance recorded with Signet

The Hampshire Down Premier Sale 2023 in Shrewsbury had a record number of sheep entered from performance recorded flocks, providing buyers with a fantastic opportunity to make informed purchasing decisions, guided by Estimated Breeding Values.
The top price was achieved by Graham and Judith Galbraith with their Graylen flock, this ram lamb 24Y2305149 won the performance recorded ram lamb class and had a Terminal Sire Index in the top 10% of the breed, excelling for growth and gigot muscularity having been CT scanned earlier in the year. And went on to sell for 2600gns. This ram was sired by Normanby Outlaw from Ed Brants Lincolnshire based Normanby flock. The Graylen flock went on to sell a further two ram lambs for 1600gns and 1400gns.
The next leading price at 2000gns was for a ram lamb (B232300026) from the Eppley flock, North Yorkshire.
Next up was a ram lamb from the Lecropt flock, Stirling, ram lamb 53Y2300625 this lamb had an impressive set of EBVs and ranked within the top 5% of the breed for Terminal Sire Index.
In the female section of the sale, top price lamb B232300023 was from the Eppleby flock and sold for 1200gns, this lamb was sired by Chaddlehanger King Eric. This sire has been used within the RamCompare project and sits in 11th place for all Hampshire Downs tested within the project based on Lamb Value (£).

Laura has joined the Signet team as a breeding specialist, she comes from an agricultural background having grown up on a sheep farm in Cornwall, where they keep commercial ewes and run a small flock of pedigree Charollais sheep.
Laura has a strong interest in animal breeding and genetics having studied Animal Science (BSc Hons) at Harper Adams University. During her time at Harper, she spent an industrial placement in Cumbria working for a sheep breeding company and some of our clients may recognise her from this role. Since graduating she has worked for a large cattle breeding company before joining us at Signet to lead on a number of Signet’s sheep breeding projects.
