Funding to support genomics

Never genotype the same sheep twice....

Signet has data sharing agreements with the Suffolk, Charollais and Hampshire Down Societies, which should avoid the need to genotype the same sheep for more than one organisation. If your Breed Society is asking you to genotype your animals, ask if the information can be shared with Signet/AHDB.

A number of organisations are supporting the genotyping of sheep in the UK

  • CT scanned lambs - All CT scanned lambs will be genotyped using funds provided by AHDB, HCC and QMS
  • Ewe genotyping
    • Funding in England is provided by AHDB to genotype up to 10 Charollais, Hampshire Down, Suffolk, Meatlinc or Dorset ewes (Funding round for 2024 has closed - but feel free to contact us if you still wish to genotype)
    • Funding in Wales is provided by HCC (via RamCompare) to genotype up to 10 ewes of any terminal Sire breed (Funding round for 2024 has closed)
    • Funding in Northern Ireland by AgResearch to genotype up to 15 ewes in any Signet recorded flock. Stock rams may be included for non-terminal sire breeds (Breeders notified and funding allocated).
    • Funding in Scotland by QMS. Funding just announced for Charollais, Hampshire Down, Suffolk, Meatlinc and Scottish Blackface
  • The Charollais Sheep Society - Will fund 50% of the genotyping costs of registered breeding ewes
  • Maedi Visna Project at Nottingham University
    • Support to genotype up to five unrelated Blue Texel, Beltex, Southdown or Easycare. More breeds may be added in future.
  • The Roslin Institute
    • Funding available for Oxford Down Breeders (Funding allocated, but please get in touch with Signet if you require more information)
